I think you're gonna need more influence than a free online petition site to get ADSL2+ in the area. |

My understanding of the issue within North Lakes is that there is a lack of infrastructure to support the ever growing need for high speed internet. So, looking at what already exists within North Lakes. First issue is that there is an exchange which has hit it's maximum capacity for available ADSL ports (if that be available space or hardware/ports, I'm not sure) but regardless there is a backlog of customers wanting internet access. Second issue is line attenuation (distance from exchange to the home) which means further the distance from the exchange the more line attenuation (or noise on the line) which slows internet speeds. The only way to fix that is to either add repeaters/boosters every 5km (which I suspect is already happening) or add another exchange closer to the homes needing internet. Once again, another issue which is the responsibility of Telstra. Having Optus add their own equipment to an already packed exchange is not going to help line speeds. Third issue is the way in which some of the copper lines (phone lines) have been rolled out. A single phone line cable has a lot of tiny twisted wires inside it, which they call 'pairs'. In theory, houses are supposed to have one single phone line cable in to each property. But this is sometimes not always the case, sometimes this is due to developers/installers being lazy or that they are just are trying to cut costs either way it's not good for the home owner. That phone line that was supposed to go in to your property directly has now been split in to two and is shared with the neighbours property. Half of the pairs go to your neighbour and the other half to you. Long story short, you can use this method fine for voice (phone) but for ADSL2+, no go. The only person/body who can really make a big impact on internet speeds in North lakes is Telstra with it's infrastructure. Personally, I would be begin with Telstra and a CICERO complaint and move upwards from there. The more complaints/lodgements the more serious Telstra have to handle it. When I was living in another suburb (similar issue) and was still working for Telstra, I lodged a formal CICERO complaint (not sure if it's still called CICERO, but anyways!) and got 4 other neighbours to do the same.. and a month later we had our exchange upgraded from analog to digital. Having previously worked in the financial section of Telstra, I know just how much it costs to move an exchange from analog to digital and it was BIG money.. yet 4 complaints go us it. Who knows, with enough complaints from North Lakes.. maybe you can persuade them that there is a need for faster internet than standard ADSL.. Good luck!

I got told I couldn't get ADSL or ADSL2+ at all. Once I got the actual phone line connected though I now get easy 10 - 20mbs during peak periods. |

Posted By Paul Novak - Novak Knight Media on 27/07/2010 10:16 PM<br />Congratulations! We're in 'old' Fairway Chase & reluctantly have been with bigpond since moving here 2 years ago. We were allegedly supposed to have ADSL2 originally from what the store salespeople said.. but the bigpond techies in the van laughed themselves into an asthma attack! Then one day this was our reading... we hit 18Mb/s!! 24hrs later we were back to 5Mb/s... here's proof: http://budurl.com/internetspeed &<img src='http://budurl.com/internetspeed'/img> |

Yup Looby, that is pretty good! You're probably getting faster speeds than 90% of the residents in NL. |

We moved into a unit in the Crest at the end of Collage st and as the lines are owned by Telstra we along with every one else in the complex can only sign up to Big-pond so even though there are other providers out there that are alot cheaper we are forced to go with them - I was told they do this with most complexes when under construction making a deal with the developers to lay the wires etc for free but in return the get a monopoly - this was disappointing to find out only after signing with the agent/managers for 6 months and as you have to sign up with big-pond for 24 months we are now stuck with them for a while As for having a problem, well as the amount of lines first put in to the north lakes area were not enough for the amount of homes etc built we had to wait 6 weeks for a free line and a further week for them to connect it then we noticed that our usage was being recorded as being used by there system even when we had no pcs on and away on holiday but a quick phone call to them sorted that out and now seems fine and 20 months of that contract to go ye ha |

I'm in Fairway Chase and have just applied to Exetel for ADSL2 as they are now, just recently, offering ADSL2 using the Telstra infrastructure. Here's the link to the deal they struck with Telstra recently http://www.itnews.com.au/News/223829,exetel-close-to-telstra-adsl2-deal.aspx The Exetel site is now showing the plans here: http://www.exetel.com.au/a_plan_pricing_new.php Will provide an update if the application is successful or not and if successful what the ADSL2 speed is like. Hope this might help some folks. Cheers |

BigPond seem to have recently cut their prices on ADSL plans across the board. Maybe you can apply for the lower price? Cheers |

Posted By soulman on 31/08/2010 5:11 PM Pleased to report my application through Exetel for ADSL 2 was successful and now I can enjoy ADSL 2 in North lakes for a pretty good price. Exetel are using the Telstra infrastructure. I am paying $75.00 for 100 gig peak and 120gig off peak (4am-10am). Telstra BigPond have also lowered their prices considerably for ADSL2 and if you are happy to bundle a full service phone (whatever that means - I think it still can even be the budget line but if not certainly Home Line Plus). For instance you can get 200gig ADSL2 from between $70-$100 depending on what you bundle. So Exetel and BigPond both have very reasonable prices for ADSL2 for North lakes residents. Whilst other localities can still enjoy ADSL2 at a cheaper margin at least this is a step in the right direction. Hope this helps. Here's my speed test since the upgrade from ADSL1 to ADSL2 today

Hi Soulman, May I ask which street you are at Fairway Chase? How is your average speed of ADSL2+ connection recently? Thanks, |

Has anyone tried using an outside aerial to improve wireless internet reception? |

after being told that we cannot get ADSL2 here in Bridgehaven for the past 4 years - we have finally managed to get it! Not aware of any big changes that have happened as to why suddenly we can get it - but now we're getting 17mb download and 1mb upload... progress! |
