Hello!
'm new to this site, sorry to shuffle my way into your conversation, but....., I'm now wondering if we have made a big mistake, we are building on the Outlook (we are from the UK) and we desperately need internet access if only to contact friends and family. Are you saying we have nil chance of this i.e. there is no broadband available? Please say not, you've got me really worried now. |

Hi Kris, Welcome to the forum! My educated guess is that you have nothing to worry about. There are very few people living in The Outlook yet so there should be plenty of spare ADSL ports available on your friendly neighbourhood RIM. It's the poor suckers who are the last to move into The Outlook who will lose out. You just have to make sure that as soon as there is paint on your shiny new walls that you get Telstra to get your line connected and then get the Internet asap after that. Don't wait until the house is handed over to you, just organise between you, your builder and Telstra to get the line in (it might be a good idea to temporarily block outgoing calls on the line, however, otherwise all the tradies who are working on your house could make lots of lengthy free overseas calls on your behalf). That's what I'd do, anyway. |

@Kris, I am using TPG and so far they have been a pleasure... $49.95 for 20GB plus a very good VOIP integration.... perfect for phoning internationally www.tpg.com.au |

I am with iiNet. I pay $99.90 for ADSL (4GB Peak/8GB Off-Peak), phone line rental, VoIP line (15 cent calls anywhere in Oz, 5 cents per min to the UK, 14 cents to SA). For an extra $10 you can get 10GB Peak/15GB Off-peak). As mentioned previously, I had no trouble connecting with iiNet. What ISP and plan you choose comes down to your needs. If, like us, you don't need a huge quota then 12GB should be plenty, but if you absolutely have to have all 9 series of the X-Files, all 12 series of ER, every episode of Lost, Heroes and Prison Break on your 15TB HDD array then you might go with one that gives you more in the way of downloads. The phone (VoIP and conventional) choices are another consideration. As PyrotiX says, Whirlpool.net.au is your friend. Check it out. |

My husband & I moved up here 2 months ago from Sydney & if we knew it would be easier getting blood from a stone than getting ADSL we would have reconsidered the house we bought. It's a joke because we got a landline with Telstra & obviously can't get ADSL with them, other companies can apparently offer it but not with a Telstra (or am I hearing the same bull as what Telstra/Bigpond told me).
We tried wireless & for 3GB @ $110 a month & the fact that the back of North Lakes has no reception is a joke. Luckily it was a 10day cooling off period. Bigpond told us to buy an antennae as this will work (yeah in there favour $$$) why pay the extra, isn't there product meant to best they can offer, why do you need to upgrade what is mean to be the best... I need ADSL as Bigpond is the only provider that can offer 25GB & when you need to be able to work from home 3 or 10GB just won't do when you work involves design.
We're over it the next I will be emailing my compaint to Julie Greer & also onto the ombudsman & I will do this daily even if I post every single day, you never know what's in an envelope till you open it.
The last thing I heard from Telstra about the upgrade is that apparently the upgrade won't happen as the Next G/3G Wireless networks are where they will make there money, unhappy customers with less money & happy Telstra with move revenue raising techniques

That's great jmraj. We're all very pleased for you, but the subject of this thread is ADSL. Nobody is disputing that wireless is available, but there are some of us who ideally would have ADSL2+ rather than wireless. I managed to get ADSL with VoIP which suits me for now, but I would liked to have got ADSL2+ or cable. |

Hey Noz,
I voiced my opinion of Telstra here a few weeks ago, I’m in the same boat (Bridghaven) and can’t get ADSL due to the shortage of space on the local RIM’s that Telstra in their infanate wisdom decided to deploy in North Lakes to save money. Been trying with Internode and TPG for 3 months no w- keep re trying , end result is “No alternate path can be found” to provide service. Bottom line is no space on the local RIMS’s
I had an interesting call from Telstra last week informing me that quote” We have be doing work in your area ( who know what that means and how they got my details etc! ) and are now able to offer you ADSL and wanted me to talk to the Big pond sales reps.. I signed up today with Big pond to see what happens and will post any successes |

I got the same call from Telstra a few weeks ago - called me up telling me they have done an upgrade in the area and was I interested in ADSL? I told him quite frankly that not only did I already have ADSL, but it is ADSL2+ that I have got, and it is with Telstra! Told him to get his facts organised before hassling customers.
Just for the record when we moved into Eastridge 18 months ago we got ADSL2+ with no problems at all - only it HAD to be with Telstra! Some credit to them it is by far the most reliable internet service I have had, but it comes at a premium! |

They have sales reps going around & that sucked us in to it again but we couldn't ADSL 2 let alone ADSL 1.... We're now looking for a decent wireless package that isn't overpriced, defenitately not Bigpond. If we could we would cut all ties with Telstra but there sales staff were great at telling us we could "bundle" our home, mobiles & internet...it's joke that is amusing to us.
Good luck to anyone trying to get anywhere with them.. |

Sorry Kirk, but isn't 7mb-12mb fast enough for you? I just suggested a temp fix to the solution. It looks like Telstra aren't great, but there are other alternatives. If you can't get adsl in this area.....then move????!! |

Well I have ADSL for now so this doesn't worry me too much but I find your (jmraj) solution lacking unfortunately. The latency on wireless generally makes any VOIP or online gaming impossible so it's not a viable solution for everyone. I also feel telling someone to sell their 500k house because Telstra is trying to save a few bob a little short sighted. Telstra should be forced to open up their exchanges to other companies, so that someone else can put in some DSLAMS on the exchange and take our money. |

Lazygamer, other ISP's can install their own DSLAMS. But most ISP's can't afford the equipment.. you are looking at roughly $10,000 a port. |

I was under the impression that since Telstra installed the RIM technology there is nothing that anyone else can do to solve this problem. |

Unless Telstra install another RIM in that area or another ISP installs their own RIM (?) people will have to wait. |

RIM: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies-archive.cfm/147062.html Annoying technology that makes it cheaper to provide a landline but is a nightmare for ADSL... |

Hi Guys, My wife and I were walking out of the Mall this morning (saturday morning) and some elderly man dressed in a suit approached us and said that he was the MP of this area and he is here to make sure people were happy and if there we had any concerns we should let him know.. He said his name was Dean Wells... He didnt know what he was getting himself into... And for the next 20 mins all he could do was listen to our plight with Broadband. I've told him our whole saga of Broadband internet in the estate and who all we have approached and its always fallen on deaf ears... He told me that this was a federal issue and he has taken my name and number down and he said somebody from the federal office will be in touch with me soon. If I dont hear from him in the week or so... I would like to drop in at Dean Wells' office and would prefer if we all showed up at his office on a saturday morning than just me going there.... Please let me know if you are keen and if it is a good idea.
Regards,
Ravi

Hi Ravi, I've dealt with Dean before in the past on other issues and he is a man of his word. I hope he can make some influence regarding this issue but I wouldn't hold your breathe. Ryan |
