I am glad after reading this thread that I was not the only one with this problem. I had my son enrolled in Preschool at NLSC last year but pulled him out because they did not have before and after school care and I did not want to send him to an ABC childcare centre, plus the cost of it was far to expensive.
My children both go to a Catholic School now which provides OHSC within the school grounds itself
Both my husband and I work full time like most other families in North Lakes and I work in the BRisbane CBD so it is almost 6pm by the time I get back into North Lakes which makes for a long day for the kids at after school care.
I think we should all put in complaints about this I spoke to Northlakes State College and told them the reason why I wasnt enrolling my son there and they didnt seem to care too much about the situation. |

Dadh1331 & hsv5ltr, Have you guys inquired about family day care with the local council? I know that they are allowed to take up to 4 children up to school age plus up to 3 children of school age. I am not too sure what the rates are like as it depends on the particular carer. I assume that the children are dropped off & picked up from school by the carer.

WOW.....isn't amazing how people like SHADOFAX can be so small minded..My family has moved to NL three months ago. I left a full time job with the intention to work part time. I am flooded with offers for jobs...lucky me. The problem is that I have no after school care for my girls. I am forced to pay....astronomical child care fees at a local centre. At the end of the week I came home with $80 in my pocket after working 20 hours.... paying for petrol, fees etc...It is not easy. Is the extra stress worthwhile on my family. I don't think so. My husband and I are just average people trying to get ahead in life and give our girls the best we can. What is the government doing to help....they are encouraging Mums to work. Why is it that my Child care benefit decreases....I look at all of the 'sensible' people - not working, sometimes single and still putting thier kids in childcare whilst they lunch with friends and go shopping. Because they don't work their CCB is higher....Shadofax....it stinks. It is not the responsibiity of the North Lakes State College to provide these benefits but shouldn't it be the responsibillity of Senior Management to liase with the community and Education QLD to make sure the right needs are fullfilled. I have also worked in Education for some years and I am aware of the expense and level of responsibility of the P & C to meet the needs of Childcare program. You need to have a strong backing from the school and from what I see, this is not forthcoming at NLSC. It was a circus on the first day of school on Monday because community cabinet was meeting at the college and Mr Beatty and entourage would be present. How much money did that cost???? Why has my daughter still not have a timetable and locker. She is all of her books to school each day and her bag is so heavy. How disorganised are they....but I am almost positive that the preparations for Mr Beatty all went smoothly...What is the priority. I would like to request that perhaps you should put more thought into your comments otherwise but out.... |

'Pyrotix Out of Hours School Care' -' Let us teach your children to play with fire and shoot a paintball gun' (metho and paintballs not included).
Somehow I don't think parents are going to sign up for that :-) |

Gee, people do take themselves a bit too seriously round here don't they. Apparently my mind is very small and I need to grow up. I love it when people use these throw away insults in an effort to get a rise out of others when valid arguments are put forward. Well, Boo Hoo guys. I am cut to the bone.....Not!
Well, for a start, I have done a considerable amount of growing up throughout my life and due to extensive experience and learning during this time, I can understand your pain. I have, for far to long, done the right thing, and been kicked in the teeth by the government who wants to throw money at the bloodsucking leeches of our society.
The one and only time I ever had to approach the government for some assistance when we were in dire straits back in the "recession we had to have"(for the youngun's - 17% interest rates!), the Centrelink staffer said I can't have any assistance and the only way I would get it would be for my wife to leave me. They went on to suggest how she should just move out for a while and make it look like we were separated!!! I certainly know many leeches would have jumped on that bandwagon and started soaking up the governments (read: us the taxpayers) money! Not for me thanks, it's not worth it.
Believe it or not, my small mind has managed to help raise three children and also deal with the little side issues of childcare etc along the way. My way of thinking is, don't whinge about it, do something about it. If you have to go without something, like the shiny and never dirty 4wd, or your carton of cigarettes a week, or your carton of Stella Artois a week (or should that be bottles of Bollinger), then sacrifice something for your children!! You could also not buy the kids every whizz bang toy under the sun to occupy their already electronically overloaded brains and save you from having to deal with them.
Work hard and work around the issue. Come up with flexible arrangements. I can guarantee your children will grow up really appreciating the time spent together as a family instead of having a TV and DVD and PS3 in their bedrooms!
Besides, I'd rather my hard earned money lined my pockets instead of the pockets of Eddie Groves!! |

Shadofax, I think you have completely missed the point of this whole thread. The whole meaning behind talking about after school care is some families DON'T have the money to spend on their kids toys and "whizz bang toy" 's, they are trying to find other ways for their kids to be safely entertained and looked after while they are still at work. They are giving up some of their pay so their kids can be in a safe environment when school is over for the day, not so they can go home and smoke and hit the alcohol. They are trying to come up with flexible arrangements and your idiotic responces about your lack of government assistance are wasting the thread space. If you want us to all know about your gripes with the government please post THAT story up in abother thread.

'Stella Artois' - They are sooo 90's - Tooheys Extra dry Platinum (triple filtered) are the go these days
The Paul Keating days, I was young then. That's an interesting point though. The days of 17% interest rates would not have been nice at all. As a Generation X'er we do like to have it good but at times it is important to look at what is essential in the family budget.
In saying that I do know a number of young familes who are doing it tough, perhaps in a similar way to 'ye old days'. No Stella or Tooheys in their family budget. The comment I have heard on more than one occasion is 'I wish I earnt enough so my wife didn't have to work' ... now there's a whole page of posts in that one ...
There is also some truth in the comment 'do something about it'. In our case it was undertaking further study (my wife did most of it!). We are still paying this off ($15k) but it has allowed both of us to secure better jobs. Tough work with little people in the house but necessary for the future.
Many families have two parents working. For familes in that situation I do believe there needs to be better provisions for after hours school care. It shouldn't be a free service, but at the same time it shouldn't cost the earth.

Angelfire, far from missing the point here, I believe I have hit the nail on the head! My point is that instead of people whining about how the government should provide a solution for them, people should come up with their own solution. I'll bet every one of the people complaining about how the school doesn't do this or the government doesn't do that, gladly takes any money off the government that they can get their hands on! Maybe they should go and live in a country where the government doesn't hand out money like candy and you cannot even get basic welfare or food from the government, where your kids have to scrounge in trash heaps for food and drink muddy water from a hole beside the road.
My examples of what to sacrifice, while generalised, are showing that you can make changes that allow you to provide your own care for your children. Give up stuff in your life so that they can have family care instead of strangers care at great expense. Maybe some people have overstretched their existence beyond what they can possibly earn???
And my "idiotic" response about my experience with the government, was showing how easy it is for people to bleed the public purse and bludge off the system. It wasn't a gripe, it was highlighting how the system even encourages you to do it!
Yes Scott you are right, some families are doing it tough. But as I said before, maybe they have over exceeded their financial possibilities. Be interesting to see how many people leave North Lakes if the interest rates ever started heading up to 17% again? It would be prime time for buying up properties going cheap! People are sweating over a half percent rise these days, sheesh, let it jump up a few percent at a time and we'll see what happens.
You are also right, that getting off your backside and putting in some extra effort can make a difference. You and your wife have done it, and others could do similar. I have done it myself. I got myself into a position where we could afford (with great sacrifice) for my wife to stay home and care for our 3 children. We managed to do this for 5 years to get them through the early years. After that, furthering ourselves allowed flexibility in our employment so that we could always manage to have one of us home for drop-offs and pick-ups at school.
So to all the name calling people, I say bring it on. Get off your backsides and do something about it instead of blaming the government. Maybe the realisation you are in over your heads is a bit hard to take? Put your energy into doing something about it. |

Hi Donna
I went on the website you mentioned to get your mobile number but I have to pay $50 to get it... Is there any other way I can get hold of your number? I would love to make use of your friendly services on Friday afternoons from 3pm - 4.30pm. Maybe we can meet somewhere this Friday afternoon after school to discuss?

Good afternoon
Does anyone know why the State School does't have a before and after school care facility. Is there a particular reason behind this.

Hi everyone,
I have jsut read this huge discussion about before school care and after school care as well as the need for baby sitters and so forth. Maybe a petition from all of the parents and guardians with work responsibilties who are in need of a service like before and after school care, can be put together. Once put together, take it to the college and something can be put forward on the schools behalf to Education Queensland and to the board and district. I am not to sure how it all works to be honest however, all i know is that the school should support the community environment and a proposal to the school from the community might be the beginning of something beneficial to all parents living in the area.
I am not a parent myself. I am a 20 year old female, thrid year education student at QUT. I am moving into Northlakes at the end of next month (April), I have 4 years experience in childcare and working with children in other contexts such as nannying. I have a diploma in children's services, blue card and first aid and most importantly a passion for working with children and families. If any body does need some help just let me know. my e-mail is margo@hodson.ws

Hello to all in beautiful North Lakes & Mango Hill!! I was a resident of NL a couple of years ago & have sadly moved to Perth (we plan to come back!!!) - however, while my daughter attended NLSC I was very involved in the beginning stages of setting up outside school hours care facility at the College. So my information may be of some use nanswering some of the questions re outside school hours care at the school - & why it hasn't happened yet. I was involved in lots of meetings with the P&C, the principal at the time was Paula Anderson - who was very much in support of the service being established. Paula & myself even went to a big school similar to NLSC on the Gold Coast to view their services. We also had the state manager for the YMCA come to the P&C meeting to do a presentation re how they could come in and run the service & pay the P&C a fee.... So what has happened??? Pretty much setting up this kind of service needs a good "driver" - someone who is prepared & able to commit lots of time & energy into getting an OSHC service in a school off the ground. I must say there were also issues relating to Child Care Benefit - the Government only allocates enough CCB places to each area & child care businesses already registered often have those CCB places allocated to them (so this means the school could set up a service but have to charge full fees - without CCB reduction... not too many families could afford that no matter how convenient) I think when we moved, Paula Anderson was transferred around the same time & I would suggest it got put on the backburner - believe me it is a full-on project to take on & at the time the P&C were really just getting off the ground themselves. My suggestion? - How many parents out there reading this forum could take on being the "driver" of this project again? I would say most of the info would have to still be at the school somewhere - or with the P&C in their records. You must understand also - OSHC service sits with the P&C to establish (yes in partnership with the school) but the P&C gets all the profits from it - so it is time consuming & difficult to get off the ground & keep running effectively, but it can work really really well. We plan to come back to the area in a year or two & i'll be happy to get back into the set up then but do all you parents who want this service want to wait that long!!!! I'll be happy to answer any Q's you might have re the initial set up things I was involved in. |

The Lakes College (the small private one in Discovery Drive) has an excellent after school care service and my kids are so happy there that they do not want to leave at 6pm when I pick them up after work. They always ask to play a little longer, which is very comforting for a working mum! The school also has a little bus which picks the kids up before school in the mornings. I am 100% happy with the school and before/after care service. |

I am sure you have solved your child care problems by now, but if you haven't I will be starting Family Day Care in approx 6 weeks (waiting for blue card), I want to specialise in Before & After school care, as I know this is needed in North Lakes, I have just moved here (two weeks ago), and am fully qualified, having worked in the child care field for nearly 15 years, I have four beautiful children of my own, two of them now go to North Lakes State College. If you need care please email me oconnorclan@aapt.net.au |
