Hi, I'm an Early Childhood teacher who'll be moving to North Lakes next year (2009) and was wondering if anyone has heard anything about the new proposed school site between Bridgehaven and The Outlook. Has construction started or does it look like I'm better off looking for options within existing schools?
Thanks very much, Melissa |

Hi Melissa, I'm no authority, but I don't think it has been decided 100% that there will be a school there. I'm hoping so, as my baby daughter would be able to go there and it's a stone's throw from where we live. If there is one, I'd say it would be built in time for the 2010 school year. Can anyone, confirm/deny any of this? |

EQ has not signed on the dotted line and why do we need two schools in one suburb? What about the surrounding suburbs? The reason the school is so big now is because people in Murrumba Downs have a choice to go to high school at North Lakes or Dakabin so many of them are now choosing North Lakes over Dakabin so I guess if they have one child at North Lakes for high school they then send their younger children to the same school as North Lakes is a P-12 school where other schhols are not. |

The new school has been signed off by Education QLD. It will be a P to 7 school from the first day being 2009, yes, next year! The new boundary is from Bridgeport Drive back into North Lakes. Half of Shearwater, Greengate, Woodside, Bridgehaven & Fairway Chase. Not sure about the Outlook. Your children do not need to change schools if you live in the above mentioned areas but new enrolments will need to enroll at the new school except people who have older siblings current at NLSC. Students will then move to NLSC to do high school. |

Can I let you into a little secret, Frustrated? North Lakes is a family-oriented suburb, not club-med. Noticed the various playgrounds dotted around? They're for kids, and kids go to school. Yes, there will be traffic congestion caused by a new school at Bridgehaven, especially it being a primary school as little kids can't walk or ride a bike to school, but if that's a problem for you there's one simple answer. And I'm sure you're intelligent enough to know what that is. ;) |

Living in Discovery Drive, I'm stuck trying to get out of the estate anytime between 8:15 and 9:45.. but if you do a quick run about in the back streets you can actually get out pretty quickly. If you don't like the road situation in the mornings, take the golf course |

Dear KirkMorrant,
All I am hoping for is some critical thinking from Stockland or the powers-that-be that plan the new school location.
They shouldn't repeat the mistakes of the past. Too much time and precious fuel is wasted in the current situation.
But perhaps I am looking at this wrong. I should buy some foreign language CD's to listen to and learn from in the car. By the time I hit Anzac each morning, I could tell you where you should take your holiday in a different dialect every day.

Good point. Stockland didn't build Discovery Drive, but I think they learned from the mistake of the previous developer - one lane in each direction isn't enough. They seem to have designed Discovery Drive to be expanded to two lanes in the future, but of course that doesn't help to save time and fuel now. Bounty Boulevard is only one lane as well, but most of Endeavour Boulevard is two lanes so going that way around will hopefully be easier (and quicker). By the way, the foreign language CD isn't such a bad idea. |

Just to clarify the above - the previous developer designed Discovery Drive to be two-lane in the future, not Stockland. I think the road infrastructure around on the "new" side of NL will be better than on the "old" side. Just a comment on Pyrotix's suggestion of going through the "back streets". It may be quicker that way, but only if the 40kph speed limit is adhered to. These "back streets" are actually residential streets, not intended for through traffic. I'm sure you, Pyrotix, would not exceed 40, but you may be encouraging others to use this method and zip through the "empty back streets" at 50-70kph, putting lives in danger. Do you get the inpression that I "love" quotation marks? |

You're right, Stockland didn't build Discovery Drive. Neither did (Lensworth) the previous developer. The original culprit who constructed in accordance with the council approved Master Plan was Lend Lease. |

Good point KirkMorrant! But even adhering to the speed limit of 40km/hr is faster than sitting in traffic for half an hour along Discovery Drive. For those who know what I'm talking about with the back roads. There is already a common route starting to emerge which sees an ant trail of cars rally around the back streets to get out of the estate in the fastest way manageable. |

I'm new here Where is this new school going to be located? I live in Bridgehaven and my daughter is going to be going to school as of next year so this news is sounding very good to me... Oh and if there are any parents here could you tell me what age kids start prep in Australia? |

To Lazygamer To start Prep in Australia, your child has to turn five by 30th June of the year they are starting Prep so if their birthday falls in July they have to wait to the start of the next school year which is end of January. One year of school is from the end of January to Mid December, all in the same year. ------------------------------------------------------------------- To PyrotiX I asked the council for more signage (well there is no signage) to be displayed along Copeland Drive as there are too many people speeding over 40kms per hour. I had to receive an eight minute lecture from someone in council asking me why I use Copeland Drive and not Discovery Drive.....well don't get me started council man who doesn't live in North Lakes and has never travelled the road during school/peak times. 1. I live very close to Copeland Drive and it's more direct route to shops but not school 2. Same distance. 3. Less time (not traffic) If they don't want residents using Copeland Drive, why do we have a road to/from North Lakes located behind Westfield off the Bruce Highway (Prospect Street) It's got me beat! A road is to used, well I thought it was until a month ago. Please don't speed along Copeland Drive and swing around the bend near where the overpass will go so fast as I nearly had a head on crash there yeaterday. My next pakn of attack may be to put something in the middle of the road to slow the traffic (like a yellow rubber/plastic thing to keep the traffic to the correct sides of the road) |

How's the development of the new school coming along?? Anyone?? We're moving to North Lakes in December, and our daughter should be commencing Year 1 in the new year. I was quite prepared to send her to NLSC - but seeing she's from a small close-knit school in NZ it might be wiser to put her in a smaller school...... am I dreaming that it will be ready by then? |

Our daughter starts Prep in Jan 09. There are a few meetings to be held soon regarding the new school opening progress/schedule by Education QLD. However, I took a drive to the site and personally I can't see that they will complete the first phase by Jan.
We have even heard a rumour that if the school isn't ready on time that for the first 6 mths, students would have to go to the NLSC and then transfer to the new school.
Also having a look at the plans, there seems to be a lot of provision for shared access of NLSC facilities, like the sports and resource centre.
So in light of the this, we have decided to send our daughter to the Lakes College, which ok will cost us a lot of money, but our child will have a settled start to her education in a nice/establised school.
Good luck with those in the process of enrolling for the new school.

Recently moved to Australia and were looking at houses in North lakes yesterday. Was quite impressed until i started reading these forums regarding the teens, the school being trashed etc which has really disheartened me. Our daughter is due to start prep in Jan 09 but don't want her going to a school where the older ones are causing havoc! Has anyone got anything positive to say about the school?? |

Both my daughters are enrolled at the new school for January 09 Just waiting for approval on the youngest though.. While I have my doubts that the school will be completely ready in time I do have to say that the principal seems to be a fantastic lady and the school sounds like it is going to have some fantastic equipment and environments... My eldest is currently at the NLSC and she is loving it there, but the classes are to big and she is a bit overwhelmed with the shear number of people there. We are really looking forward to the new school... As for The Lakes College I have to say I haven't heard all good news about that school either.. Honestly I think choosing a school if a very difficult thing for a parent and you will always wonder if you have made the right decision.. |

Lazygamer, can I be nosey and ask why you're waiting approval on your youngest child?? And do you, or anyone else know where I can find more information about the new school? The only stuff i've been able to find thus far, is right here! I really am too impatient to wait til we move in December to find out all this for myself! |

Hi Jmraj, Our children attend TLC and we love it. The children are very happy there. I'm sure your daughter will like it. The school is still small and has a very close knit community of parents. The Principal is incredibly dedicated to children, the school and its future. I agree that is it one of the toughest decisions a parent has to make and not every school suits every child. I know that my children would find the State College too large. Good luck next year SQUIRT |

I just put in an enrolment form for my daughter to attend grade 6 at the new Bridgehaven State School. I have been told that the principal is confident that the school will be ready by 27 January 2009, but they'd better get their skates on if that's going to happen. Whether we keep our daughter there in grade 7 remains to be seen as we intend to send her to Grace Lutheran College for the remaining years of her school career. She currently attends TLC, where she has had Katie Dawson as her teacher this year which has been really good as she is a great teacher. We, unfortunately, have a few issues with other aspects of TLC and are therefore moving her. As someone else has already said, not every child will suit a particular school. |

@Jolene, My youngest daughter only turns 5 in September next year so accordingly she should be going to Prep in 2010, however we only recently moved to Australia and she was in formal schooling already so we petitioned the gov to allow her in as we feel it's in her best interests and they are reviewing it accordingly... It all looks positive at the moment.. As for more information about the school I don't know of any official site but you are more than welcome to leave questions here and I will pass them past the wife who is dealing with all of it |
